Summary:
After buying their home and the basic needs for their house, they find that they have happily settled into life in their new house. Jurgis finds that the amount of work that he has to do at the slaughterhouse is a huge amount. However, he does not seem to mind, but rather enjoys it. When he finds out that everyone else hates their jobs and their bosses, he is shocked. When asked to join the Union, at first he does not wish to join because he believes that the people who are in the union are simply lazy.
Dede Antanas was offered a job in a swap for 1/3 of his wages, which he takes. Dede does inform his family about the fact that he is packing unsanitary meat for human’s to eat. Tamoszius Kuszleika, a coworker of Jurgis, tells him that there is corruption throughout Packingtown. Tamoszius also tells Jurgis about the fact that it is impossible to move ahead without being taking part in the trend of corruption.
Marija learns that she has replaced a fifteen-year employee. She also learns that Jonas was hired for his job after his predecessor died as a result of the unsafe working conditions.
